“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
- Proverbs 3:5 (NIV)
Feelings are a gift from God. They help us experience joy, love, compassion, grief, and gratitude. But while feelings are real, they are not always reliable. They change with our circumstances, experiences, and emotions.
Faith, on the other hand, is anchored in the unchanging character and promises of God. It doesn't rise and fall with the day you're having.
Feelings change with our circumstances. Faith is anchored in the unchanging character of God.
Throughout the Bible, many of God's people experienced fear, doubt, sadness, and uncertainty. David felt abandoned. Elijah became discouraged to the point of despair. Even Jesus' closest followers were terrified during a storm.
A furious squall came up while Jesus slept in the boat, and the waves broke over it so that it was nearly swamped (Mark 4:37).
The disciples woke Him in a panic: "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"
Jesus got up, rebuked the wind, and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then He asked them, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"
Their feelings told them they were about to die. His presence told a different story - and He did not tell them to follow their emotions. He called them to trust Him.
Living by faith does not mean ignoring our feelings. Rather, it means allowing God's truth to shape how we respond to them.
Faith doesn't deny what you feel. It answers it with something more dependable.
Faith is not denying reality; it is choosing to believe that God's Word is more dependable than our changing emotions.
As we spend time in Scripture and prayer, our hearts are gradually transformed, and our feelings begin to align more closely with God's truth. The strongest believers are not those who never struggle with emotions - they are those who continually bring their emotions before God and allow His Word to lead them.

You will not stop feeling fear, doubt, or sadness by trying harder to suppress them. You overcome their control by bringing them to God and letting His truth answer them.
Jesus did not scold the disciples for feeling the storm. He asked why they let it silence their faith.
The same question is worth asking yourself today.
Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
