“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.”
- Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)
At some point in life, almost everyone asks: "What does God want me to do?"
Whether you're making a major life decision or simply seeking direction for the next chapter of your life, discerning God's will can sometimes feel overwhelming.
Many Christians expect God's will to arrive through dramatic signs, audible voices, or extraordinary miracles. While God can certainly work in remarkable ways, the Bible teaches that His guidance is most often revealed through a daily relationship with Him.
God's will is usually discovered one faithful step at a time - not all at once.
Before asking "What is God's will?", it's helpful to understand that the Bible speaks about God's will in different ways.
This is God's ultimate plan for history and creation. It cannot be stopped or altered by human circumstances. Throughout history, God has fulfilled His purposes despite wars, kingdoms rising and falling, and human failure. His plan always prevails.
God has clearly revealed how He desires His people to live. His Word teaches us to love others, pursue holiness, forgive generously, act with integrity, seek justice, and walk humbly with Him.
If a decision contradicts God's Word, it cannot be God's will.
These are the everyday decisions that many believers wrestle with.
While the Bible may not mention every individual decision specifically, it gives timeless principles that help us make wise, God-honouring choices.
God continues to guide His people today in ways that are consistent with His character and His Word.
The Bible is God's primary source of guidance.
Psalm 119 describes God's Word as "a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
Notice that a lamp doesn't illuminate an entire journey - it provides enough light for the next step.
God often works the same way. Rather than revealing your entire future, He faithfully guides today's decision.
Prayer is not simply asking God to bless our plans - it is allowing Him to shape them.
As we spend time with God, our desires begin to align with His purposes.
Often, clarity comes not because our circumstances change, but because our hearts do.
Prayer develops sensitivity to God's leading.
God invites us to seek wisdom. The book of James promises that if anyone lacks wisdom, they should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault.
Wisdom allows us to evaluate opportunities through a biblical perspective rather than emotional impulse.
God's guidance is rarely rushed. Wisdom teaches patience.
God frequently speaks through mature believers - pastors, mentors, trusted Christian friends.
People who know God's Word can often see things we overlook.
Seeking wise counsel is not a sign of weakness. It is a sign of humility.
Peace should never replace Scripture, but it often confirms decisions that already align with God's Word.
The peace God gives is different from temporary comfort - it is a deep confidence that remains even when circumstances are uncertain.
As Philippians reminds us, God's peace guards both our hearts and our minds.
Sometimes we delay obedience because we're waiting for a miracle, a dream, or a dramatic confirmation. Meanwhile, God has already revealed the next faithful step through His Word.
Obedience often precedes clarity.
Fear has prevented many people from pursuing God's calling. Fear focuses on what might go wrong. Faith focuses on who is leading us. God rarely calls us into lives of comfort - He calls us into lives of trust.
Sometimes we become more interested in receiving answers than developing a relationship with the One who gives them. Knowing God's will begins with knowing God Himself. The closer you grow to Him, the easier it becomes to recognise His leading.
When facing an important decision, ask yourself these questions:
If the answers consistently point in the right direction, you can move forward with confidence, trusting God to guide your steps.
God is more interested in shaping your character than simply showing you your destination.
Many people wish God would reveal the next ten years of their lives. Instead, He usually reveals the next step.
Imagine climbing a staircase in a dark room. A small light may only illuminate the next step - not the entire staircase. Yet as you take each step in faith, more of the path becomes visible.
He invites us to trust Him today before revealing tomorrow.

Discovering God's will is rarely about finding a hidden map.
It is about walking daily with the One who already knows the destination.
As you grow closer to Christ through prayer, Scripture, obedience, and wise counsel, His direction becomes increasingly clear.
You don't need to know every detail about tomorrow. You simply need to trust the God who is already there.
One faithful step taken today can become the beginning of a remarkable journey designed by God.
"The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps."
- Proverbs 16:9 (ESV)
